Pastor Bayo Adeyokunnu:
A Life of Faith, Service, & Leadership
Early Life and Spiritual Foundation
Born on October 16, 1954, Pastor Adebayo Adebanji Adeyokunnu’s life journey began in Ilesha, now in Osun State, Nigeria. He was born into a devout Christian family, where the values of faith and integrity were deeply instilled. His parents, Pa Jacob Adelusi Adeyokunnu and Mama Felicia Morohunfola Adeyokunnu, raised him in a Christian household where faith in God was the cornerstone of everyday life. This strong foundation helped shape his worldview and would later guide him on his remarkable spiritual journey.
Pastor Bayo received his early education at Methodist Primary School in Ilesha and continued at Methodist High School, both in Ilesha. His early years were marked by a hunger for knowledge and a deepening awareness of God's calling upon his life, even though it would take some years before he fully responded to that call.
Career Beginnings and Conversion to Christianity
After completing his secondary education, Pastor Adeyokunnu embarked on a career in secular professions, working for Nigeria Airways Limited between 1970 and 1976. This was followed by a two-year stint at the Posts and Telegraph Department of Nigeria from 1977 to 1979. His diverse work experience also included a role at Oyo State College of Education from 1979 to 1980, but God had much more in store for him.
In 1980, his life took a significant turn when he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior, marking the beginning of his lifelong commitment to ministry. He joined the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ilesha that same year. In addition to his newfound faith, Pastor Adeyokunnu was admitted to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), where his academic and spiritual life flourished simultaneously. At the University, he became deeply involved in the Student Christian Movement (SCM), serving in various capacities, including Assistant Librarian and later as Vice-President in 1984.
Academic and Ministerial Growth
Pastor Adeyokunnu graduated from the University of Ife in 1984 with a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies. Shortly after, he began teaching at the RCCG Bible College, where he lectured on Christology, Evangelism, Eschatology, and English Language, among other subjects, for the next nine years. His academic background and ministry experience blended seamlessly, enabling him to impact lives both within and beyond the classroom.
Marriage and Family Life
In 1985, Pastor Adeyokunnu married Pastor Margaret Adeyokunnu, his beloved life partner and co-laborer in the vineyard of Christ. Together, they have built a family rooted in faith, love, and devotion to God. Their union has been blessed not only with children but also with numerous spiritual children across the globe, as they have mentored and nurtured countless believers. Their marriage has also been a model of Christian love, and they have co-authored several books on marriage and family life, sharing their wisdom and experiences to inspire others.
Pioneering Ministries and Early Leadership in RCCG
1985 was a pivotal year in Pastor Adeyokunnu’s life. In addition to marrying his wife, he was ordained as an Assistant Pastor in RCCG and became deeply involved in pioneering ministries. He started the first Hospital and Prison Ministry of RCCG in Lagos, a ministry that still serves as a critical outreach effort for the church. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the church’s first magazine, The New Vision, which was circulated within the RCCG University fellowship.
His leadership qualities continued to flourish, and between 1988 and 1990, he assisted in establishing RCCG branches in key areas of Lagos, including the first RCCG parish in Ikoyi/Victoria Island.
Migration to the United States and Expansion of Ministry
In 1993, Pastor Adeyokunnu emigrated to the United States with his family, answering God's call to expand the church's mission internationally. Initially, he worked with Pastor Olu Obed in Tallahassee, Florida, but in 1996, the Holy Spirit directed him to Maryland, where he founded RCCG Victory Temple in Bowie. This church would become a hub for spiritual growth, outreach, and service under his leadership. Pastor Adeyokunnu’s ministry quickly gained recognition for its emphasis on biblical teaching, community involvement, and the transformative power of God’s Word.
Church Planting and Leadership
Pastor Adeyokunnu’s ministry extended far beyond the walls of Victory Temple. Over the years, he has been instrumental in planting more than 60 churches in the United States and Nigeria, as well as international locations such as India. His passion for reaching the lost and expanding the Kingdom of God has led to the establishment of vibrant RCCG communities in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and beyond.
In addition to his church planting efforts, Pastor Adeyokunnu founded the Redeemed Christian Bible College, North America. Under his leadership, the college received accreditation to award degrees up to the Doctoral level, significantly expanding the academic and theological training available to future church leaders in RCCG North America.
